Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Stock

Born in 1959, General Secretary of the Association of Protestant Denominational Schools (Karlsruhe) and university lecturer. He studied history and political science at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and the University of Oxford. He received his doctorate from Oxford University with a thesis on the role of the Länder in German European politics. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at the IESE Business School in Barcelona. Stock began his journalistic career in the 1980s at the daily newspaper Die Welt. At that time, he worked for various daily newspapers as a freelance correspondent in the former Eastern Bloc countries, reporting from Poland for Die Welt during the period of martial law. He established close contacts with opposition intellectuals in the GDR, the Polish trade union Solidarność and Charta 77 in Czechoslovakia. At the same time, he was involved in the Pan-European Youth and the International Society for Human Rights. As a result, he was banned from entering the GDR in 1985.
From 1988 to 1996, he worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), reporting on the first free elections in the GDR in 1990. From 1991, he was the FAZ’s political correspondent in Bonn. From 1996 to 1998 he was managing editor of the Berliner Zeitung, and from 1998 to 2001 political correspondent for Focus in Bonn and Berlin. In 2000, he published the first biography of Angela Merkel. From 2001 to 2003, he was head of the politics department and managing editor of Welt am Sonntag. From 2003 to 2005, he worked for the media research institute Medientenor. In 2006, he invented and produced Chancellor Angela Merkel’s video podcast, which was new at the time.
Stock spent two semesters in 2004/2005 as a deputy to the Chair of Journalism at Justus Liebig University Giessen, later lecturing at Alice Salomon University, Berlin, and for many years as a lecturer at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). From 2012 to 2017, he was Managing Director of Christburg Campus Berlin (formerly Freie Evangelische schulen Berlin) before being appointed General Secretary of the Verband Evangelischer Bekenntnisschulen e.V. in fall 2017.
